Crioconita
La crioconita es un polvillo polvo polvo hecho de una combinación de pequeñas partículas de roca, hollín y microbios que se deposita y se acumula en la nieve, glaciares o capas de hielo. El oscurecimiento, especialmente de pequeñas cantidades de hollín, absorbe la radiación solar que derrite la nieve o el hielo debajo del depósito, y creando a veces un agujero del cryoconite. La crioconita puede contener polvo de desiertos continentales lejanos o tierras de cultivo, partículas de erupciones volcánicas o emisiones de centrales eléctricas, y hollín. Fue descubierto y nombrado por Nils A. E. Nordenskiöld cuando viajó a la calota de Groenlandia en 1870. Durante el verano, los agujeros de criooconita con frecuencia contienen agua líquida y por lo tanto proporcionan un nicho para los microorganismos adaptados al frío como las bacterias y las algas para prosperar.
