La escritura cuneiforme es uno de los primeros sistemas conocidos de escritura, que se distingue por sus marcas en forma de cuña en las tabletas de arcilla, hechas por medio de una caña romo para un lápiz óptico. El nombre cuneiforme en sí mismo significa simplemente "en forma de cuña", desde el latín cuneo "cuña" y forma "forma", y entró en el uso del inglés, probablemente de cunéiforme francés antiguo. Emergindo en Sumer en el último cuarto milenio AC, la escritura cuneiform comenzó como sistema de pictographs. En el tercer milenio, las representaciones pictóricas se simplificaron y se hicieron más abstractas a medida que el número de personajes en uso creció, de unos 1.000 en la edad de bronce temprana a unos 400 en la edad de bronce tardía. El sistema consiste en una combinación de signos logófonos, consonánticos, alfabéticos y silábicos. El manuscrito sumerio original fue adaptado para la escritura de las lenguas Akkadian, Eblaite, Elamite, Hittite, Luwian, Hattic, Hurrian, y Urartian, e inspiró el Ugaritic y el viejo alfabeto persa. La escritura cuneiforme fue gradualmente reemplazada por el alfabeto fenicio durante el Imperio Neo-Asirio.
