La escritura cirílica / sɨrɪlɪk / es un sistema de escritura alfabético empleado a través de Eurasia. Se basa en el cirílico temprano, que fue desarrollado en el primer imperio búlgaro durante el siglo IX dC en la escuela literaria de Preslav. Es la base de alfabetos utilizados en varios idiomas, pasados y presentes, en partes de los Balcanes y Eurasia del Norte, especialmente los de origen eslavo, y las lenguas no eslavas influenciadas por el ruso. A partir de 2011, alrededor de 252 millones de personas en Eurasia lo utilizan como el alfabeto oficial para sus idiomas nacionales. Cerca de la mitad de ellos están en Rusia. Cirílico es uno de los sistemas de escritura más utilizados en el mundo. Cirílico se deriva de la escritura uncial griega, aumentada por las letras del antiguo alfabeto glagolítico, incluyendo algunas ligaduras. Estas letras adicionales se utilizaron para los sonidos eslavos de la Iglesia Antigua que no se encuentran en griego. El guión se nombra en honor a los dos hermanos bizantinos, los Santos Cirilo y Metodio, que crearon el alfabeto glagolítico anteriormente.
