Las descripciones definidas "la persona en el espacio" y "el senador de Ohio" son impropias porque la frase nominal X se aplica a más de una cosa, y las descripciones definidas "el primer hombre en Marte" y "el senador de Washington D.C." Son impropios porque X se aplica a nada. Las descripciones inadecuadas plantean algunas preguntas difíciles acerca de la ley del medio excluido, la denotación, la modalidad y el contenido mental.
