En el estudio del lenguaje, la descripción o la lingüística descriptiva es el trabajo de analizar y describir objetivamente cómo el lenguaje es hablado por un grupo de personas en una comunidad de habla. Toda investigación académica en lingüística es descriptiva; Como todas las demás ciencias, su objetivo es observar el mundo lingüístico tal como es, sin el sesgo de ideas preconcebidas sobre cómo debe ser.
