El Libro de Deuteronomio es el quinto libro de la Biblia hebrea, y de la Torah / Pentateuco judío. El título hebreo se toma de la primera frase Eleh ha-devarim, "Estas son las palabras ..."; El título en inglés es de una traducción griega errónea de la frase hebrea mishneh ha-torah ha-zoth, "una copia de esta ley", en Deuteronomio 17:18, en cuanto a deuteronomion touto - "esta segunda ley". El libro consiste en tres sermones o discursos entregados a los israelitas por Moisés en las llanuras de Moab, poco antes de entrar en la Tierra Prometida. El primer sermón recapitula los cuarenta años de vagabundeos en el desierto que han llevado a este momento, y termina con una exhortación a observar la ley, más tarde referida como la Ley de Moisés; El segundo recuerda a los israelitas la necesidad de la lealtad exclusiva a un solo Dios y la observancia de las leyes que les ha dado, de las que depende la posesión de la tierra; Y el tercero ofrece el consuelo de que incluso Israel debe ser infiel y perder la tierra, con el arrepentimiento todo puede ser restaurado.

The Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible, and of the Jewish Torah/Pentateuch. The Hebrew title is taken from the opening phrase Eleh ha-devarim, "These are the words..."; the English title is from a Greek mis-translation of the Hebrew phrase mishneh ha-torah ha-zoth, "a copy of this law", in Deuteronomy 17:18, as to deuteronomion touto – "this second law". The book consists of three sermons or speeches delivered to the Israelites by Moses on the plains of Moab, shortly before they enter the Promised Land. The first sermon recapitulates the forty years of wilderness wanderings which have led to this moment, and ends with an exhortation to observe the law, later referred to as the Law of Moses; the second reminds the Israelites of the need for exclusive allegiance to one God and observance of the laws he has given them, on which their possession of the land depends; and the third offers the comfort that even should Israel prove unfaithful and so lose the land, with repentance all can be restored.
