La devaluación en la política monetaria moderna es una reducción en el valor de una moneda con respecto a aquellos bienes, servicios u otras unidades monetarias con las cuales esa moneda puede ser intercambiada. Por «devaluación» se entiende la disminución oficial del valor de la moneda de un país dentro de un sistema de tipo de cambio fijo, mediante el cual la autoridad monetaria establece formalmente un nuevo tipo fijo con respecto a una moneda extranjera de referencia. Por el contrario, la depreciación se utiliza para describir una disminución en el valor de una moneda debido a las fuerzas del mercado, no a las acciones políticas del gobierno o del banco central. Bajo el segundo sistema los bancos centrales mantienen las tasas hacia arriba o hacia abajo mediante la compra o venta de divisas, por lo general pero no siempre USD. Lo contrario de la devaluación se llama revaloración. La depreciación y la devaluación a veces se usan incorrectamente indistintamente, pero siempre se refieren a valores en términos de otras monedas. La inflación, por otra parte, se refiere al valor de la moneda en bienes y servicios. Alterar el valor nominal de una moneda sin reducir su tipo de cambio es una redenominación, no una devaluación o revaluación.
