Diapir
Un diapir es un tipo de intrusión en el cual un material más móvil y ductily deformable se fuerza en rocas quebradizas quebradizas. Dependiendo del ambiente tectónico, los diapires pueden extenderse desde estructuras idealizadas en forma de hongo Rayleigh-Taylor-inestabilidad en regiones con bajo estrés tectónico como en el Golfo de México a estrechos diques de material que se mueven a lo largo de fracturas inducidas tectonically en la roca circundante. El término fue introducido por el geólogo rumano Ludovic Mrazek, quien fue el primero en entender el principio de intrusión salina y plasticidad. El término "diapir" puede aplicarse a estructuras ígneas, pero se aplica más comúnmente a materiales no ígneos, relativamente fríos, tales como domos de sal y diapires de barro. Además de las observaciones basadas en la Tierra, se cree que el diapirismo se produce en la luna de Neptuno Tritón, la luna Europa de Júpiter, la luna Encelado de Saturno y la luna Miranda de Urano. Los diapires comúnmente se introducen verticalmente hacia arriba a lo largo de fracturas o zonas de debilidad estructural a través de rocas superpuestas más densas debido al contraste de densidad entre una masa de roca menos densa y baja y las rocas más densas que la recubren. El contraste de densidad se manifiesta como una fuerza de flotabilidad.
