Fundición a presión
La fundición a presión es un proceso de fundición de metal que se caracteriza por forzar metal fundido bajo alta presión dentro de una cavidad de molde. La cavidad del molde se crea utilizando dos matrices de acero de herramienta endurecidas que han sido mecanizadas en forma y trabajan de forma similar a un molde de inyección durante el proceso. La mayoría de las piezas de fundición están hechas de metales no ferrosos, específicamente aleaciones de zinc, cobre, aluminio, magnesio, plomo, peltre y estaño. Dependiendo del tipo de metal que está siendo colado, se usa una máquina de cámara caliente o fría. El equipo de fundición y las matrices de metal representan grandes costos de capital y esto tiende a limitar el proceso a una producción de gran volumen. La fabricación de piezas con fundición a presión es relativamente simple, con sólo cuatro pasos principales, lo que mantiene bajo el costo incremental por artículo. Es especialmente adecuado para una gran cantidad de piezas moldeadas de tamaño pequeño a mediano, por lo que la fundición a presión produce más piezas de fundición que cualquier otro proceso de fundición. Las piezas fundidas se caracterizan por un muy buen acabado superficial y consistencia dimensional.
