Ecorregión
Una ecorregión es un área ecológica y geográficamente definida que es más pequeña que una bioregión, que a su vez es más pequeña que una ecozona. Los tres son más grandes que un ecosistema. Las ecoregiones cubren áreas relativamente grandes de tierra o agua y contienen conjuntos característicos y geográficamente distintos de comunidades y especies naturales. La biodiversidad de flora, fauna y ecosistemas que caracterizan una ecorregión tiende a ser distinta de la de otras ecorregiones. En teoría, la biodiversidad o las ecorregiones de conservación son áreas relativamente grandes de tierra o agua donde la probabilidad de encontrar diferentes especies y comunidades en cualquier punto dado permanece relativamente constante, dentro de un rango de variación aceptable. Tres advertencias son apropiadas para todos los enfoques de cartografía biogeográfica. En primer lugar, ningún marco biogeográfico único es óptimo para todos los taxones. Las ecoregiones reflejan el mejor compromiso para el mayor número posible de taxones. En segundo lugar, las fronteras de la ecorregión rara vez forman bordes abruptos; Más bien, los ecotonos y los hábitats de mosaico los atan. En tercer lugar, la mayoría de las ecorregiones contienen hábitats que difieren de su bioma asignado. Las provincias biogeográficas pueden originarse debido a diversas barreras.
