Capacidad
Capacitancia es la capacidad de un cuerpo para almacenar una carga eléctrica. Cualquier objeto que pueda cargarse eléctricamente exhibe capacitancia. Una forma común de dispositivo de almacenamiento de energía es un condensador de placa paralela. En un condensador de placa paralela, la capacitancia es directamente proporcional al área superficial de las placas conductoras e inversamente proporcional a la distancia de separación entre las placas. Si las cargas en las placas son + q y -q respectivamente, y V da el voltaje entre las placas, entonces se da la capacitancia C por la que da la relación voltaje / corriente. La capacitancia es una función solamente de la geometría de los conductores y La permitividad del dieléctrico. Es independiente de la diferencia de potencial entre los conductores y la carga total sobre ellos. La unidad SI de capacitancia es el farad, llamado así por el físico inglés Michael Faraday. Un condensador de 1 farad, cuando se carga con 1 coulomb de carga eléctrica, tiene una diferencia de potencial de 1 voltio entre sus placas. Históricamente, un farad era considerado como una unidad inconvenientemente grande, tanto eléctricamente como físicamente.
