El potencial del electrodo E en electroquímica, de acuerdo con una definición IUPAC, es la fuerza electromotriz de una célula construida de dos electrodos: ▪ en el lado izquierdo es el electrodo de hidrógeno estándar, y ▪ en el lado derecho está el electrodo Cuyo potencial se está definiendo. Por convenio: ECell = ECathode - EAnode De lo anterior, para la celda con el electrodo de hidrógeno estándar, se obtiene: ECell = ERight - 0 = EElectrode La convención de izquierda a derecha es consistente con el acuerdo internacional de que los potenciales redox se dan para reacciones escritas En forma de semi-reacciones de reducción. El potencial del electrodo se mide en voltios.
