Electroscopio
Un electroscopio es un instrumento científico temprano que se utiliza para detectar la presencia y la magnitud de la carga eléctrica en un cuerpo. Fue el primer instrumento de medición eléctrica. El primer electroscopio, una aguja pivotada llamada versorium, fue inventado por el médico británico William Gilbert hacia 1600. El electroscopio de bola de médula y el electroscopio de hoja de oro son dos tipos clásicos de electroscopio que todavía se utilizan en la educación física para demostrar los principios de electrostática. También se utiliza un tipo de electroscopio en el dosímetro de radiación de fibra de cuarzo. El científico austríaco Víctor Hess utilizó los electroscopios en el descubrimiento de los rayos cósmicos. Los electroscopios detectan la carga eléctrica por el movimiento de un objeto de prueba debido a la fuerza electrostática de Coulomb. El potencial eléctrico o voltaje de un objeto es igual a su carga dividida por su capacidad, por lo que los electroscopios pueden considerarse como voltímetros crudos. La acumulación de carga suficiente para detectar con un electroscopio requiere cientos o miles de voltios, por lo que los electroscopios se utilizan sólo con fuentes de alto voltaje, como electricidad estática y máquinas electrostáticas.
