Retículo endoplásmico
El retículo endoplasmático es un tipo de organelo en las células de los organismos eucariotas que forma una red interconectada de sacos o tubos aplanados, encerrados en la membrana, conocidos como cisternas. Las membranas de la ER son continuas con la membrana externa de la envoltura nuclear. El retículo endoplásmico se produce en la mayoría de los tipos de células eucariotas, incluyendo la Giardia más primitiva, pero está ausente de los glóbulos rojos y de los espermatozoides. Hay dos tipos de retículo endoplásmico, retículo endoplasmático rugoso y retículo endoplásmico liso. La cara externa del retículo endoplasmático rugoso está tachonada con ribosomas que son los sitios de síntesis de proteínas. El retículo endoplasmático rugoso es especialmente prominente en células tales como hepatocitos donde se produce la síntesis de proteínas activas. El retículo endoplasmático liso carece de ribosomas y funciona en el metabolismo de los lípidos, metabolismo de carbohidratos y desintoxicación y es especialmente abundante en células de hígado y gónadas de mamíferos. Las membranas de encaje del retículo endoplásmico fueron vistas por primera vez en 1945 por Keith R. Porter, Albert Claude, Brody Meskers y Ernest F. Fullam.
