Zona fótica
La zona fótica, zona euphotic, o zona de la luz del sol es la profundidad del agua en un lago o un océano que esté expuesta a la luz solar suficiente para que ocurra la fotosíntesis. Se extiende desde la superficie hasta una profundidad donde la intensidad de la luz cae al uno por ciento de la superficie, llamada profundidad eufótica. En consecuencia, su espesor depende de la extensión de la atenuación de la luz en la columna de agua. Las profundidades eufóticas típicas varían desde sólo unos pocos centímetros en los lagos altamente turbios eutróficos, hasta unos 200 metros en el mar abierto. También varía con los cambios estacionales en la turbidez. Puesto que la zona fótica es donde casi toda la productividad primaria ocurre, la profundidad de la zona fótica es generalmente proporcional al nivel de productividad primaria que ocurre en esa área del océano. Alrededor del 90% de toda la vida marina vive en la zona fótica. Una pequeña cantidad de producción primaria se genera profundamente en la zona abisal alrededor de los respiraderos hidrotermales que existen a lo largo de algunas crestas medio-oceánicas. La zona que se extiende desde la base de la zona eufótica hasta unos 200 metros se denomina a veces zona disfótica.
