El nivel del mar se utiliza generalmente para referirse al nivel medio del mar, un nivel medio para la superficie de uno o más de los océanos de la Tierra desde el cual pueden medirse alturas tales como elevaciones. Los niveles del mar pueden verse afectados por muchos factores y se sabe que han variado mucho sobre escalas de tiempo geológicas. La cuidadosa medición de las variaciones en los niveles medios del mar puede ofrecer información sobre el cambio climático y ha sido interpretada como evidencia que apoya la opinión de que el actual aumento de los niveles del mar es un indicador del calentamiento global.
