Exotismo
El exotismo es una tendencia en el arte y el diseño europeo, influenciado por algunos grupos étnicos o civilizaciones de finales del siglo XIX. Primero estimulado por el comercio oriental en los siglos XVI y XVII, el interés por el arte no occidental de los europeos se hizo cada vez más popular después del colonialismo europeo. El llamado arte "oriental" emanaba de un tipo de fantasía primitiva para la sociedad occidental, reflejando los gustos cada vez más exóticos de Europa. Las influencias del exotismo se pueden ver a través de numerosos géneros de este período, especialmente en la música, la pintura y el arte decorativo. En la música, el exotismo es un género en el que los ritmos, las melodías o la instrumentación están diseñados para evocar la atmósfera de tierras lejanas o de la antigüedad. Al igual que los temas orientalistas de la pintura del siglo XIX, el exotismo en las artes decorativas y la decoración de interiores estuvo asociado con fantasías de opulencia. El exotismo, por una definición, es "el encanto de lo desconocido". El académico Alden Jones define el exotismo en el arte y la literatura como la representación de una cultura para el consumo por otra.
