El expresionismo fue un movimiento modernista, inicialmente en poesía y pintura, originario de Alemania a principios del siglo XX. Su rasgo típico es presentar el mundo únicamente desde una perspectiva subjetiva, distorsionándolo radicalmente para producir efectos emocionales para evocar estados de ánimo o ideas.
