Horas extras o tiempo extra es un período adicional de juego especificado bajo las reglas de un deporte para traer un juego a una decisión y evitar declarar el empate o empate donde las puntuaciones son iguales. En la mayoría de los deportes, este período extra sólo se juega si se requiere que el juego tenga un ganador claro, como en torneos de eliminación única en los que sólo un equipo o jugador por partido puede avanzar a la siguiente ronda. En otros deportes, particularmente aquellos que se juegan en forma prominente en América del Norte, donde los lazos son generalmente desfavorecidos, se emplea algún tipo de tiempo extra para todos los partidos. Las reglas de tiempo extra o tiempo extra varían entre deportes e incluso diferentes competiciones. Algunos pueden emplear "muerte súbita", donde el primer jugador o equipo que marca inmediatamente gana el juego. En otros, el juego continúa hasta que haya transcurrido un tiempo determinado, y sólo entonces se declara el ganador. Si el concurso permanece empatado después de la sesión extra, dependiendo de las reglas, el partido puede terminar inmediatamente como empate, se pueden jugar periodos adicionales, o se puede utilizar un procedimiento de desempate diferente, tal como una tanda de penales.
