Falla (geología)
En geología, una falla es una fractura o discontinuidad planar en un volumen de roca, a través del cual se ha producido un desplazamiento significativo a lo largo de las fracturas como resultado del movimiento de la tierra. Las grandes fallas dentro de la corteza terrestre son el resultado de la acción de las fuerzas tectónicas de las placas, siendo las más grandes las que forman los límites entre las placas, como las zonas de subducción o las fallas de transformación. La liberación de energía asociada con el movimiento rápido en fallas activas es la causa de la mayoría de los terremotos. Una línea de falla es la traza superficial de un fallo, la línea de intersección entre el plano de falla y la superficie de la Tierra. Dado que los fallos no suelen consistir en una sola fractura limpia, los geólogos usan el término zona de falla cuando se refieren a la zona de deformación compleja asociada con el plano de falla. Los dos lados de un fallo no vertical se conocen como la pared colgante y la pared del pie. Por definición, la pared colgante se produce por encima del plano de falla y la pared de pie se produce por debajo de la falla. Esta terminología proviene de la minería: cuando se trabaja en un cuerpo tabular de mineral, el minero estaba de pie con la pared del pie bajo sus pies y con la pared colgante colgada sobre él.
