Los crinoides son animales marinos que conforman la clase Crinoidea de los equinodermos. Crinoidea viene de la palabra griega krinon, "un lirio", y eidos, "forma". Viven en aguas poco profundas y en profundidades tan grandes como 6.000 metros. Los lirios de mar se refieren a los crinoides que, en su forma adulta, se unen al fondo del mar por un tallo. Las estrellas de plumas o comatulidas se refieren a las formas no estucadas. Los crinoides se caracterizan por una boca en la superficie superior que está rodeada por los brazos de alimentación. Tienen un intestino en forma de U, y su ano está situado junto a la boca. Aunque se puede reconocer el patrón básico del equinodermo de simetría quíntuple, la mayoría de los crinoides tienen más de cinco brazos. Los crinoides suelen tener un tallo que se utiliza para adherirse a un sustrato, pero muchos viven unidos sólo como juveniles y se convierten en nadar libremente como adultos. Hay solamente cerca de 600 especies existentes del crinoid, pero eran mucho más abundantes y diverso en el pasado. Algunas capas gruesas de piedra caliza que datan del Paleozoico mediano hasta tardío están casi totalmente constituidas por fragmentos de crinoides desarticulados.
