El término "folio", del folio latino, tiene tres significados interconectados pero distintos en el mundo de los libros y la imprenta. En primer lugar es un término para un método común de ordenar hojas de papel en forma de libro, plegar la hoja sólo una vez, y un término para un libro hecho de esta manera. En segundo lugar es un término general para una hoja, hoja o página en manuscritos y libros antiguos, y en tercer lugar un término aproximado para el tamaño de un libro, y para un libro de este tamaño. En primer lugar, un folio es un libro o folleto compuesto de una o más hojas completas de papel, en cada una de las cuales se imprimen cuatro páginas de texto, dos a cada lado; Cada hoja se pliega una vez para producir dos hojas. Cada hoja de un libro folio es así la mitad del tamaño de la hoja original. Normalmente, hojas folio impresas adicionales se insertarían dentro de una otra para formar un grupo o "recolección" de hojas antes de unir el libro.
