Se compone de: ▪ Kerguelen, un grupo de islas volcánicas en el sur del Océano Índico, al sureste de África, aproximadamente equidistante entre África, la Antártida y Australia; ▪ Islas de St. Paul y Amsterdam, un grupo al norte de Kerguelen; ▪ Las islas Crozet, un grupo en el sur del Océano Índico, al sur de Madagascar; ▪ Adélie Land, la reivindicación francesa en el continente antártico; ▪ las Islas Dispersas, un grupo disperso de islas alrededor de la costa de Madagascar. El territorio también se conoce como las Tierras Australes Francesas o Territorios Australes Franceses. Esto excluye a Adélie Land, donde la soberanía francesa no es ampliamente reconocida.
