Procesador frontal
Un procesador frontal, o un procesador de comunicaciones, es un ordenador de pequeño tamaño que hace interfaz con el ordenador central de varias redes, tales como SNA, o una serie de dispositivos periféricos, tales como terminales, unidades de disco, impresoras y unidades de cinta. Los datos se transfieren entre el ordenador principal y el procesador frontal utilizando una interfaz paralela de alta velocidad. El procesador frontal se comunica con dispositivos periféricos que utilizan interfaces seriales más lentas, usualmente también a través de redes de comunicación. El propósito es descargar de la computadora host el trabajo de administrar los dispositivos periféricos, transmitir y recibir mensajes, ensamblar paquetes y desensamblar, detección de errores y corrección de errores. Dos ejemplos son el controlador de comunicaciones IBM 3705 y el procesador de comunicaciones de datos Burroughs. A veces, FEP es sinónimo de un controlador de comunicaciones, aunque este último no es necesariamente tan flexible. Los primeros controladores de comunicaciones como la serie IBM 270x estaban cableados, pero las unidades posteriores eran dispositivos programables. El procesador frontal también se utiliza en un sentido más general en sistemas asimétricos de varios procesadores.
