En la química orgánica, los grupos funcionales son grupos específicos de átomos o enlaces dentro de moléculas que son responsables de las reacciones químicas características de esas moléculas. El mismo grupo funcional experimentará la misma o similar reacción química independientemente del tamaño de la molécula de la que forme parte. Sin embargo, su reactividad relativa puede ser modificada por grupos funcionales cercanos. La palabra fracción / mɔɪəti / a menudo se usa sinónimo de "grupo funcional" pero, de acuerdo con la definición de la IUPAC, un resto es una parte de una molécula que puede incluir grupos enteros funcionales o partes de grupos funcionales como subestructuras. Por ejemplo, un éster tiene un grupo funcional éster y está compuesto por un resto alcoxi y un resto acilo, o, equivalentemente, puede dividirse en grupos carboxilato y alquilo.
