Galvanotropismo neuronal
El galvanotropismo neuronal es la capacidad de dirigir el crecimiento de los procesos neuronales mediante el uso de un campo eléctrico extracelular. Esta técnica se ha investigado desde finales de la década de 1920 y se ha demostrado que dirige la formación de ambos procesos axónicos y dendríticos en el cultivo celular. Sólo es posible dirigir el crecimiento de las preparaciones in vitro en este punto. Las preparaciones in vitro implican el uso de un plato de cultivo, en el que existe un factor de crecimiento neuronal específico de la especie. Las neuronas se eliminan de un animal elegido, se colocan en el plato y se deja crecer. La aplicación de un campo eléctrico extracelular muestra que las células crecen procesos en una dirección que demuestra la dirección del campo eléctrico aplicado. Esto podría estar en la dirección del cátodo o ánodo, dependiendo del tipo de sustrato sobre el que se colocan las células. Se cree que el mecanismo subyacente a este comportamiento involucra el efecto del campo eléctrico sobre los receptores y las proteínas de la membrana en la superficie de la célula. Estas proteínas cargadas experimentarían una fuerza electroforética que las tira hacia el polo opuesto del campo eléctrico.
