La astronomía de rayos gamma es la observación astronómica de los rayos gamma, la forma más enérgica de radiación electromagnética con energías de fotones por encima de 100 keV. La radiación por debajo de 100 keV se clasifica como rayos X y es objeto de astronomía de rayos X. La literatura astronómica generalmente hifenifica "rayos gamma" cuando se usa como un adjetivo, pero para usar "rayos gamma" sin un guión para el sustantivo. Los rayos gamma de la gama MeV se generan en bengalas solares, pero los rayos gamma en la gama GeV no se originan en nuestro sistema solar y son importantes en el estudio de la astronomía extrasolar y especialmente extra-galáctica. Los mecanismos que emiten los rayos gamma son diversos, en su mayoría idénticos a los que emiten rayos X, pero a energías superiores, incluyendo la aniquilación de electrones positrones, el Efecto Compton Inverso y en algunos casos también la desintegración de material radiactivo en el espacio que refleja eventos extremos como supernovas Y las hipernovas, y el comportamiento de la materia en condiciones extremas, como en los pulsares y blazares.
