La cromatografía de gases es un tipo común de cromatografía utilizada en química analítica para separar y analizar compuestos que pueden ser vaporizados sin descomposición. Los usos típicos de GC incluyen ensayar la pureza de una sustancia particular, o separar los diferentes componentes de una mezcla. En algunas situaciones, GC puede ayudar a identificar un compuesto. La fase estacionaria es una capa microscópica de líquido o polímero sobre un soporte sólido inerte, dentro de una pieza de vidrio o tubo metálico denominado columna. El instrumento utilizado para realizar la cromatografía de gases se denomina cromatógrafo de gases. Los compuestos gaseosos que se analizan interactúan con las paredes de la columna, que está revestida con una fase estacionaria. Esto hace que cada compuesto elute en un tiempo diferente, conocido como el tiempo de retención del compuesto. La comparación de los tiempos de retención es lo que da GC su utilidad analítica.
