Órbita geoestacionaria
Una órbita geoestacionaria, órbita geoestacionaria o órbita ecuatorial geosincrónica (GEO), es una órbita cuya posición en el cielo sigue siendo la misma para un observador estacionario en la tierra. Este efecto se consigue con una órbita circular de 35.786 kilómetros (22.236 mi) por encima del ecuador de la Tierra y siguiendo la dirección de la rotación de la Tierra. Un objeto en tal órbita tiene un período orbital igual al período de rotación de la Tierra (un día sideral), y por lo tanto aparece inmóvil en una posición fija en el cielo a los observadores de tierra. Los satélites de comunicaciones y los satélites meteorológicos se colocan a menudo en órbitas geoestacionarias, de modo que las antenas satelitales que se comunican con ellas no tienen que moverse para rastrearlas, sino que pueden señalarse permanentemente en la posición en el cielo donde se encuentran. Utilizando esta característica, los satélites de color oceánico con sensores visibles (por ejemplo, el Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI)) también pueden ser operados en órbita geoestacionaria con el fin de monitorear los cambios sensibles de los ambientes oceánicos.
