El grafito / ɡræfaɪt / se hace casi enteramente de átomos de carbono, y como con el diamante, es un mineral semimetal del elemento mineral, y un alotrope del carbón. Grafito, que significa "piedra de escribir", fue nombrado por Abraham Gottlob Werner en 1789 del griego antiguo γράφω, "dibujar / escribir", para su uso en lápices, donde se conoce como plomo. El grafito es la forma más estable de carbono bajo condiciones estándar. Por lo tanto, se utiliza en la termoquímica como el estado estándar para definir el calor de formación de compuestos de carbono. El grafito puede considerarse como el grado más alto de carbón, justo encima de la antracita y alternativamente llamado meta-antracita, aunque no se utiliza normalmente como combustible porque es difícil de encender.
