Hamites es un género de amonita heteromorfa que evolucionó tarde en la etapa Aptiana del Cretácico Inferior y duró hasta la etapa Cenomaniana del Cretácico Superior. El género es casi seguro parafilético, pero sigue siendo de uso amplio como un "todo" para heteromorph ammonites de la superfamilia Turrilitaceae que no encajan perfectamente en los grupos más derivados. En un intento por identificar clados dentro del género, ha sido dividido en una serie de nuevos géneros o subgéneros por diferentes paleontólogos, incluyendo Eohamitas, Hamitella, Helicohamitas, Lytohamitas, Planohamitas, Psilohamitas y Sziveshamitas. La especie del tipo es Hamites attenuatus del albiano temprano, nombrada por James Sowerby en su Conchology Mineral de Gran Bretaña de 1814, aunque el género sí mismo fuera creado por James Parkinson en su libro de 1811 Restos Orgánicos del mundo anterior. Este James Parkinson es mejor conocido como la primera descripción científica de una enfermedad que él llamó la Parálisis Sacudida, ahora conocida como enfermedad de Parkinson en su honor.
