Alquiler de compra es el término legal para un contrato, en el que un comprador se compromete a pagar por las mercancías en partes o un porcentaje durante varios meses. En Canadá y los Estados Unidos, una compra a plazos se denomina un plan de cuotas aunque estos pueden diferir ligeramente como en un contrato de compra-venta, la propiedad del bien permanece con el vendedor hasta que se haga el último pago. Otras prácticas análogas se describen como arrendamiento cerrado o alquiler propio. El contrato de compra-venta se desarrolló en el Reino Unido en el siglo 19 para permitir a los clientes con una escasez de dinero para hacer una compra cara que de otro modo tendría que retrasar o renunciar. Por ejemplo, en los casos en que un comprador no puede permitirse el lujo de pagar el precio solicitado por un artículo de propiedad como una suma global, pero puede pagar un porcentaje como un depósito, un contrato de alquiler-compra permite al comprador contratar los bienes por un alquiler mensual . Cuando una cantidad igual al precio total original más los intereses se ha pagado en cuotas iguales, el comprador puede ejercer una opción para comprar los bienes a un precio predeterminado o devolver los bienes al propietario.

In Canada and the United States, a hire purchase is termed an installment plan although these may differ slightly as in a hire purchase agreement the ownership of the good remains with the seller until the last payment is made. Other analogous practices are described as closed-end leasing or rent to own. The hire purchase agreement was developed in the United Kingdom in the 19th century to allow customers with a cash shortage to make an expensive purchase they otherwise would have to delay or forgo. For example in cases where a buyer cannot afford to pay the asked price for an item of property as a lump sum but can afford to pay a percentage as a deposit, a hire-purchase contract allows the buyer to hire the goods for a monthly rent. When a sum equal to the original full price plus interest has been paid in equal installments, the buyer may then exercise an option to buy the goods at a predetermined price or return the goods to the owner.
