Enlace de hidrógeno
Un enlace de hidrógeno es la interacción electromagnética atractiva entre las moléculas polares, en las que el hidrógeno está unido a un átomo altamente electronegativo, como el nitrógeno, el oxígeno o el flúor. El nombre de enlace de hidrógeno es algo inapropiado, ya que no es un vínculo verdadero, sino una atracción dipolo-dipolo particularmente fuerte, y no debe confundirse con un enlace covalente. Estas atracciones de enlace de hidrógeno pueden ocurrir entre moléculas o dentro de diferentes partes de una sola molécula. El enlace de hidrógeno es más fuerte que una interacción de van der Waals, pero más débil que los enlaces covalentes o iónicos. Este tipo de enlace puede ocurrir en moléculas inorgánicas como el agua y en moléculas orgánicas como el ADN y las proteínas. El enlace de hidrógeno intermolecular es responsable del alto punto de ebullición del agua en comparación con los otros hidruros del grupo 16 que no tienen enlaces de hidrógeno. El enlace de hidrógeno intramolecular es parcialmente responsable de las estructuras secundarias y terciarias de las proteínas y los ácidos nucleicos. También juega un papel importante en la estructura de los polímeros, tanto sintéticos como naturales. En 2011, un Grupo de Tarea de la UICPA recomendó una moderna definición basada en pruebas de enlaces de hidrógeno.
