Histéresis
La histéresis es la dependencia de la salida de un sistema no sólo en su entrada actual, sino también en su historia de entradas pasadas. La dependencia surge porque la historia afecta el valor de un estado interno. Para predecir sus resultados futuros, se debe conocer su estado interno o su historia. Si una entrada dada aumenta y disminuye alternativamente, una marca típica de histéresis es que la salida forma un bucle como en la figura. Tales bucles pueden ocurrir puramente debido a un retardo dinámico entre la entrada y la salida. Este efecto desaparece cuando la entrada cambia más lentamente. Este efecto cumple con la descripción de la histéresis dada anteriormente, pero a menudo se denomina histéresis dependiente de la velocidad para distinguirla de la histéresis con un efecto de memoria más duradero. La histéresis se produce en materiales ferromagnéticos y materiales ferroeléctricos, así como en la deformación de algunos materiales en respuesta a una fuerza variable. En los sistemas naturales, la histéresis se asocia a menudo a un cambio termodinámico irreversible. Muchos sistemas artificiales están diseñados para tener histéresis: por ejemplo, en termostatos y disparadores Schmitt, se utiliza la histéresis para evitar una conmutación rápida no deseada.
