Idealización
La idealización es el proceso por el cual los modelos científicos asumen hechos sobre el fenómeno que se modelan que son estrictamente falsos pero hacen que los modelos sean más fáciles de entender o resolver. Es decir, se determina si el fenómeno se aproxima a un "caso ideal", entonces el modelo se aplica para hacer una predicción basada en ese caso ideal. Si una aproximación es exacta, el modelo tendrá alta precisión predictiva; Por ejemplo, no suele ser necesario tener en cuenta la resistencia del aire cuando se determina la aceleración de una bola de bolos que cae, y hacerlo sería más complicado. En este caso, la resistencia del aire es idealizada como cero. Aunque esto no es estrictamente cierto, es una buena aproximación porque su efecto es despreciable comparado con el de la gravedad. Las idealizaciones pueden permitir que se hagan predicciones cuando ninguna otra cosa podría ser. Por ejemplo, la aproximación de la resistencia del aire como cero era la única opción antes de que la formulación de la ley de Stokes permitiera el cálculo de las fuerzas de arrastre.
