Número complejo
Un número complejo es un número que puede expresarse en la forma a + bi, donde a y b son números reales e i es la unidad imaginaria, que satisface la ecuación i2 = -1. En esta expresión, a es la parte real y b es la parte imaginaria del número complejo. Los números complejos extienden el concepto de la línea numérica unidimensional al plano complejo bidimensional usando el eje horizontal para la parte real y el eje vertical para la parte imaginaria. El número complejo a + bi puede ser identificado con el punto en el plano complejo. Un número complejo cuya parte real es cero se dice que es puramente imaginario, mientras que un número complejo cuya parte imaginaria es cero es un número real. De esta manera, los números complejos contienen los números reales ordinarios mientras que los extienden para solucionar los problemas que no se pueden resolver con los números reales solamente. Además de su uso dentro de las matemáticas, los números complejos tienen aplicaciones prácticas en muchos campos, incluyendo la física, la química, la biología, la economía, la ingeniería eléctrica y las estadísticas.
