Indio
El indio es un elemento químico con el símbolo En y el número atómico 49. Este otro metal pesado raro, muy suave, maleable y fácilmente fusible es químicamente similar al galio y al talio, y muestra propiedades intermedias entre estos dos. El indio fue descubierto en 1863 y nombrado para la línea azul índigo en su espectro que era la primera indicación de su existencia en los minerales del cinc, como elemento nuevo y desconocido. El metal fue aislado por primera vez en el año siguiente. Los minerales de zinc siguen siendo la principal fuente de indio, donde se encuentra en forma compuesta. Muy raramente el elemento se puede encontrar como granos de metal nativo, pero éstos no son de importancia comercial. La principal aplicación actual del Indio es formar electrodos transparentes a partir de óxido de indio estaño en pantallas de cristal líquido y pantallas táctiles, y este uso determina en gran medida su producción minera global. Es ampliamente utilizado en películas delgadas para formar capas lubricadas. También se utiliza para hacer particularmente aleaciones de bajo punto de fusión, y es un componente en algunas soldaduras sin plomo. El indio no es conocido por ser utilizado por ningún organismo.
