La teoría de la información es una rama de la matemática aplicada, la ingeniería eléctrica, y la informática que implica la cuantificación de la información. La teoría de la información fue desarrollada por Claude E. Shannon para encontrar límites fundamentales en las operaciones de procesamiento de señales, tales como comprimir datos y almacenar y comunicar datos de forma fiable. Desde su creación se ha ampliado para encontrar aplicaciones en muchas otras áreas, incluyendo la inferencia estadística, procesamiento del lenguaje natural, criptografía, neurobiología, la evolución y función de los códigos moleculares, selección de modelos en ecología, física térmica, computación cuántica, detección de plagio y otras formas Del análisis de los datos. Una medida clave de la información es la entropía, que suele expresarse por el número medio de bits necesarios para almacenar o comunicar un símbolo en un mensaje. La entropía cuantifica la incertidumbre implicada en la predicción del valor de una variable aleatoria. Por ejemplo, especificar el resultado de un cambio de moneda equitativa (dos resultados igualmente probables) proporciona menos información (entropía más baja) que especificar el resultado de una tirada (seis resultados igualmente probables).
