El uso de información privilegiada es la negociación de valores de una empresa pública u otros valores por individuos con acceso a información no pública sobre la compañía. En varios países, el uso de información privilegiada basada en información privilegiada es ilegal. Esto se debe a que se considera injusto para otros inversores que no tienen acceso a la información. Los autores de un estudio afirman que el uso indebido de información privilegiada aumenta el costo del capital para los emisores de valores, disminuyendo así el crecimiento económico general.
