A través de los muchos campos relacionados con la interactividad, incluyendo la ciencia de la información, la informática, la interacción hombre-computadora, la comunicación y el diseño industrial, hay poco acuerdo sobre el significado del término interactividad. Existen múltiples vistas sobre la interactividad. En la "vista de contingencia" de la interactividad, hay tres niveles: ▪ No interactivo, cuando un mensaje no está relacionado con mensajes anteriores; ▪ Reactivo, cuando un mensaje está relacionado sólo con un mensaje inmediatamente anterior; Y ▪ Interactivo, cuando un mensaje está relacionado con una serie de mensajes anteriores y con la relación entre ellos. Un cuerpo de investigación ha hecho una fuerte distinción entre la interacción y la interactividad. Como el sufijo 'ity' se usa para formar nombres que denotan una calidad o condición, este cuerpo de investigación ha definido la interactividad como la 'calidad o condición de la interacción'. Estos investigadores sugieren que la distinción entre la interacción y la interactividad es importante, ya que la interacción puede estar presente en cualquier entorno, pero la calidad de la interacción varía de baja y alta.
