Interferón
Los interferones son proteínas fabricadas y liberadas por las células huésped en respuesta a la presencia de patógenos tales como virus, bacterias, parásitos o células tumorales. Permiten la comunicación entre las células para activar las defensas protectoras del sistema inmunológico que erradican patógenos o tumores. Los IFN pertenecen a la gran clase de glicoproteínas conocidas como citoquinas. Los interferones reciben el nombre de su capacidad para "interferir" con la replicación viral dentro de las células huésped. Los IFN tienen otras funciones: activan las células inmunes, tales como células asesinas naturales y macrófagos; Aumentan el reconocimiento de la infección o de las células tumorales mediante la regulación de la presentación del antígeno a los linfocitos T; Y aumentan la capacidad de las células huésped no infectadas para resistir la nueva infección por el virus. Ciertos síntomas, como los músculos adoloridos y la fiebre, están relacionados con la producción de IFN durante la infección. Se han identificado cerca de diez IFNs diferentes en mamíferos; Siete de éstos han sido descritos para los seres humanos. Normalmente se dividen entre tres clases de IFN: IFN de Tipo I, IFN de Tipo II y IFN de Tipo III. Los IFN pertenecientes a todas las clases de IFN son muy importantes para combatir infecciones virales.
