Ionización
La ionización es el proceso mediante el cual un átomo o una molécula adquiere una carga negativa o positiva al ganar o perder electrones. La ionización resulta de la interacción de un átomo o una molécula con una partícula subatómica o ondas electromagnéticas en el extremo de la longitud de onda corta del espectro electromagnético que tienen suficiente energía cinética para causar ionización. La ionización puede ocurrir en ausencia de una influencia externa por el proceso interno de conversión, a través del cual un núcleo excitado transfiere su energía a uno de los electrones de la capa interna y lo expulsa con energía cinética alta. El proceso de ionización es de particular interés en la ciencia fundamental. También se encuentra en muchos campos de interés práctico, que van desde la espectroscopia de masas hasta la radioterapia para eliminar las células cancerosas. Obviamente, todos los aspectos del proceso de ionización no pueden ser abordados en un solo artículo enciclopédico.
