Isopoda
Isopoda es una orden de crustáceos peracáridos. Los isópodos viven en el mar, en agua dulce o en tierra e incluyen animales conocidos como el pizarra y el pajar. La mayoría son pequeños animales de color opaco con exoesqueletos rígidos y segmentados, dos pares de antenas, siete pares de miembros articulados en el tórax y cinco pares de apéndices ramificados en el abdomen que se usan en la respiración. Las hembras crían a sus crías en una bolsa debajo de su tórax. Los isópodos son detritivores y navegadores, carnívoros, ectoparásitos, principalmente de peces, algunos endoparásitos y alimentadores de filtro. Los isópodos acuáticos viven en el lecho marino o en el fondo del cuerpo de agua dulce, pero algunos taxones más derivados emprenden breves períodos de actividad de natación. Las formas terrestres se mueven moviéndose y tienden a encontrarse en ambientes frescos y húmedos. Algunas especies pueden rodar en una pelota. Hay más de 10.000 especies de isópodos en todo el mundo con alrededor de 4.500 especies que se encuentran en ambientes marinos, sobre todo en el fondo marino, 500 especies en agua dulce y otras 5.000 especies en tierra. El orden se divide en once subordenes.
