Cupressus sempervirens
Cupressus sempervirens, el ciprés mediterráneo es una especie de ciprés nativa de la región del Mediterráneo oriental, en el noreste de Libia, el sur de Albania, el sudeste de Grecia, el sur de Turquía, Chipre, el norte de Egipto, el oeste de Siria, Líbano, Israel, Malta, Y también una población disjunta en Irán. Es un árbol de coníferas de tamaño mediano de hoja perenne de 35 m de altura, con una corona cónica con ramas de nivel y ramas variablemente holgadamente colgantes. Tiene una vida muy larga, con algunos árboles reportados por tener más de 1.000 años de antigüedad. El follaje crece en pulverizaciones densas, de color verde oscuro. Las hojas son escalables, de 2-5 mm de largo, y producidas en brotes redondeados. Los conos de semilla son ovales u oblongos, de 25-40 mm de largo, con 10-14 escamas, verdes al principio, madurando de color marrón unos 20-24 meses después de la polinización. Los conos machos tienen 3-5 mm de largo y liberan polen al final del invierno. Es moderadamente susceptible al cáncer de ciprés, causado por el hongo Seiridium cardinale, y puede sufrir un deterioro extenso donde esta enfermedad es común. El nombre de la especie sempervirens proviene del latín para 'evergreen'.
