Los kumquats o los cumquats son un grupo de árboles frutales pequeños en la familia de la planta floreciente Rutaceae, formando el género Fortunella, o colocado dentro de Citrus sensu lato. La fruta comestible se asemeja mucho a la de la naranja, pero es mucho más pequeña y ovular, siendo aproximadamente el tamaño y la forma de una aceituna grande. El nombre inglés "kumquat" deriva de la pronunciación cantonense gam1 gwat1. Son arbustos perennes de crecimiento lento o árboles cortos, de 2,5 a 4,5 metros de altura, con ramas densas, a veces con espinas pequeñas. Las hojas son de color verde oscuro brillante, y las flores son blancas, similares a otras flores de cítricos, llevadas solas o agrupadas en las axilas de las hojas. Dependiendo del tamaño, el árbol de kumquat puede producir cientos o incluso miles de frutas cada año. El árbol puede ser hidrofítico, crecido en agua, con la fruta a menudo se encuentra flotando en el agua cerca de la costa durante la temporada madura. La planta es nativa del sur de Asia y la región de Asia-Pacífico. La referencia histórica más temprana a kumquats aparece en la literatura de China en el siglo XII.
