El buitre barbudo, también conocido como lammergeier o lammergeyer, es un ave de rapiña, y el único miembro del género Gypaetus. Tradicionalmente considerado un buitre del Viejo Mundo, en realidad forma un linaje menor de Accipitridae junto con el buitre egipcio, su pariente vivo más cercano. No se relaciona mucho más con los buitres del Viejo Mundo que con, por ejemplo, los halcones, y difiere del primero por su cuello emplumado. Aunque diferentes, el egipcio y el buitre barbudo tienen cada uno una cola en forma de losangos - inusual entre las aves de rapiña. Se alimenta principalmente de carrión y vive y se cría en los riscos en las altas montañas del sur de Europa, el Cáucaso, África, el subcontinente indio y el Tíbet, poniendo uno o dos huevos a mediados de invierno que incuban a principios de la primavera. Las poblaciones son residentes.
