Periodo de incubación
El período de incubación es el tiempo transcurrido entre la exposición a un organismo patógeno, un producto químico o una radiación, y cuando los síntomas y los signos son aparentes por primera vez. En una enfermedad infecciosa típica, el período de incubación significa el período tomado por el organismo multiplicador para alcanzar un umbral necesario para producir síntomas en el huésped. En algunas enfermedades, como se muestra en este diagrama, el período latente es más corto que el período de incubación. Una persona puede transmitir la infección sin mostrar ningún signo de la enfermedad. Dicha infección se denomina infección subclínica. Mientras que el latente o período de latencia puede ser sinónimo, a veces se hace una distinción entre el período de incubación, el período entre la infección y el inicio clínico de la enfermedad, y el período latente, el tiempo de la infección a la infecciosidad. Lo que es más corto depende de la enfermedad. Una persona puede ser portadora de una enfermedad, como Streptococcus en la garganta, sin mostrar ningún síntoma. Dependiendo de la enfermedad, la persona puede o no ser contagiosa durante el período de incubación. Durante la latencia clínica, una infección es subclínica.
