Latifundia
Un latifundio es una parcela muy extensa de tierras de propiedad privada. Los latifundios de la historia romana eran grandes haciendas, especializadas en agricultura destinada a la exportación: grano, aceite de oliva o vino. Fueron característicos de Magna Graecia y Sicilia, de Egipto y Maghreb de África del Norte y de Hispania Baetica en el sur de España. Los latifundios eran la aproximación más cercana a la agricultura industrializada en la Antigüedad, y su economía dependía del trabajo esclavo. Durante el período colonial moderno, los monarcas portugués y español a menudo recompensaron el servicio militar con extensas concesiones de tierras en Brasil, Bolivia, México, Venezuela, Uruguay, Cuba, Chile y Argentina. El reclutamiento forzoso de trabajadores locales permitidos por la ley colonial hizo que estas concesiones de tierras fueran particularmente lucrativas para sus propietarios.
