Papa León X
El papa León X, nacido Giovanni di Lorenzo de Medici, fue papa desde el 9 de marzo de 1513 hasta su muerte en 1521. El segundo hijo de Lorenzo el Magnífico, gobernante de la república florentina, fue elevado al cardenalato en 1489. Después de la muerte Del Papa Julio II, Giovanni fue elegido papa después de asegurar el respaldo de los miembros más jóvenes del Colegio Sagrado. Al principio de su gobierno supervisó las sesiones de clausura del Quinto Concilio de Letrán, pero fracasó lo suficiente como para implementar las reformas acordadas. En 1517 llevó a cabo una costosa guerra que logró asegurar a su sobrino como duque de Urbino, pero que dañó las finanzas papales. Más tarde escapó por poco de un complot de algunos cardenales para envenenarlo. Probablemente es mejor recordado por otorgar indulgencias a quienes donaron para reconstruir la Basílica de San Pedro, práctica que fue desafiada por las 95 Tesis de Martín Lutero. Su Bula Papal de 1520, Exsurge Domine, simplemente condenó a Lutero en varias áreas y dificultó el compromiso continuo.
