Papa León XIII
El Papa León XIII, nacido Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci a una familia comital italiana, reinó desde el 20 de febrero de 1878 hasta su muerte en 1903. Fue el papa más antiguo y tuvo el tercer pontificado más largo, detrás de Pío IX y el Papa Juan Pablo II . Es el más reciente pontífice hasta la fecha para tomar el nombre pontificio de "Leo" al ser elegido para el pontificado. Es conocido por el intelectualismo, el desarrollo de las enseñanzas sociales con su famosa encíclica papal Rerum Novarum y sus intentos por definir la posición de la Iglesia Católica con respecto al pensamiento moderno. Influyó en la Mariología Católica Romana y promovió tanto el rosario como el escapulario. Publicó un record de once encíclicas sobre el rosario que ganó el apodo de "Rosario Papa", aprobó dos nuevos escapularios marianos y fue el primer Papa en abrazar plenamente el concepto de María como mediadora. Él fue el primer papa que nunca tuvo ningún control sobre los Estados Papales, después de que fueron disueltos en 1870. León XIII murió el 20 de julio de 1903 a la edad de 93 años y fue enterrado brevemente en las grutas de la Basílica de San Pedro antes de sus restos Fueron trasladados posteriormente a la Basílica de San Juan de Letrán.
